The Question of The Week

Can someone please explain to me (through a relatively simple example) how much stronger carbon nanotubes are than steel?

Space elevators

I am someone who, a long time ago, read a novel by Arthut C Clarke, which described a structure called a space elevator. I have thought about that elevator many times since then, and although there are technical problems to overcome, I believe space elevators are the answer to many of the problems we face in conquering space. In fact, I am one of at least a few people who think that the main hurdles to be overcome are those of actually building a safe system from parts and materials that are already available, raising awareness and public support for it, and the funding of such a venture. Several designs have been proposed, along with some related variants that work in a similar fashion. I would like this blog to support the discussion of all aspects of this topic. One of my features is going to be "The Question of The Week." This weeks question should be relatively simple. I hope.
